Interested to know what happened to the 1st two Defender-class ships. Presumably they were lost rather than decommissioned?

I believe the first one burned down. The second one sank into the swamp. The third one burned down, then fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the Fourth one, well, that one stayed intact.

But I could be confusing my media... πŸ˜‰

Perhaps the first two were built by the lowest bidder? One good reactor leak and they'd probably become training ships. Even space itself is unforgiving, at the speeds they're talking about a Twinkie could do serious damage.

In today's world we're still sailing aircraft carriers that were designed 40 or more years ago. I would think anything as critical as the Earth Defence Force would keep those ships active, even if they were nothing more than stationary weapons platforms orbiting the Earth or moon.

Unless... Ryk has a plan, where they were sent off to build a remote base, a staging base for an attack on the Jung... πŸ˜‰

Yes, but then CV1 Langley was made in the 20's and was essentially a trainer to learn how carriers, etc. operated. I just learned from looking it up that the Japanese sunk it very, very early in the war.

I can see it now, the ships descended into the atmosphere of Jupiter or Saturn, and built Cloud City, free of "Imperial" entanglements. Unfortunately, the Jung discover it, and use it to try and trap Nathan, who they see as critical to the plans of this "Rebel Alliance"...

Well, while exactly what happened is still unclear, Episode 9 does say that two ships were lost without an engagement, and made it sound like it was common knowledge and happened long before the invasion.

You also have to understand that the solar radiation and the other types of radiations out in space are a lot harsher then the open seas.(the salt is also unforgiving) That would be interesting if the EDF did send them to the fringe or to look for the Jung home world. But it would be neat to find out what really happen to them.

The most radiation vulnerable part of a manned spaceship is the crew. The two meter thick armor plating helps a lot. The Celestia passed through the harshest radiation belt in the solar system in order to get to that inner moon, so I hope they're all right.

20th and early 21st century unmanned space tech is built to be as light as it can, and so communication satellites end up getting a good dose, but that amount is fairly well known and then designed for.

Best defense against radiation is mass. Mass is the biggest enemy to acceleration. Acceleration can only be achieved with the expenditure of massive amounts of energy. Kind of a vicious cycle. Leads to Wood, Coal, Oil, Nuclear, Fusion, AntiMatter, ZPD... Sounds like the game Civilization.

Hilarious! However, other than book one, we hear almost nothing about her two large....tracts of land.

Well it seems they are important, they come up again in episode ten. Still no explanation though...

I think that was Ryk trying to suppress our clamor to find out more of them. kind of a "Knock it off, already!" πŸ™‚

If I were in charge when earth found out about the Jung' I would misplace a few ships too, to form a resistance. I would have given BV 1 & 2 FTL in secret. I would have moved additional supplies and personal to them prior to "loss". I would have tasked analysts with finding an appropriate system for a hidden base of operations. I would have promoted a fleet commander in exile with a mission to covertly set up camp in that system (I would keep both ships together to pool resources initially).

Begin mining and fabrication operations. I would have sent special projects people with copies of as much info from the data arch as possible for continued RnD. Build facilities to construct/repair ships. Build fighters and small ftl attack craft to complement the bigger defender class. When the smaller ships were ready, send out spec ops missions to locate other rebel factions.

This is not the stuff of a book or two. This could very well be part 2... and now I feel bad for writting all of this in a blog post...
