Ryk, Where are you at in regard the script for Rogue 4? Any update on how that's going?
I'm re-reading the series again... Its so wierd reading 1.1 again now (first time since being introduced to Tuplo/Scott in 2.3)
@four-islands I’m rereading the series as well while we wait but it is also the first time I’ve read them since reading Arrival. In Resistance Chapter 3 (about 30% through) I’m listening (Audible while I drive to work) to Loki and Major Waddell cross the river and I’m thinking, I’ve heard this before. I don’t mean because I’ve read this part before but in another book. Then it hit me, this is pretty much the same story of Jack and Will crossing their river on their way back to the main camp (chapter 6 about 30% through). Rock in the middle, fast water, one of them can’t swim, trouble and near drowning. All the cool stuff that might happen when crossing a river. Both versions are very captivating.
Have you read Arrival? I forget if you said you did, but I’m wondering if you or anyone else for that matter noticed any other similarities or snippets between the two stories?
Here's the thing. Ryk wrote Arrival but never intended to release it.
Ryk then started writing the Frontiers saga. He thought back to all of the cool stuff he wrote in Arrival (and probably other short stories down though the years) and said, Hay, that was cool, I'll put that bit about crossing the river into this new story.
Then after finishing part 1, Ryk decided to release Arrival as a standalone in the gap between Parts. speciffically stating that it was an old work, different, and that only semi related to FS. I really doubt that Ryk intended any of us to feel slighted by this one scene (and likely others).
I read Arrival once, and liked it, but as its not part of the continuity, so I don't feel obliged to include it in my re-reading of a growing number of main story episodes, so it will likely not play on my mind.
What I will say is that because of the skill sets needed to survive planet-side are completely different to space travel, its not unlikely that this scenario of crossing a river with one person able to swim and another not and with a rope where there is a shallows/rock in the middle will be repeated in many works. (actually I don't think Jack? could swim, he just jumped into the water and hoped it would work) Its what works, its what would happen. Although I do like the variant where someone tries to cross the river by climbing a tree and the branch breaks. That's fun.
You know, I didn't even realize I did that!
Funny thing is, both of those scenes are based on a real event that happened to me. The rock, the river, the entire scene is straight out of my childhood. Kings Rivers, Cedar Grove CA. I was about 15 at the time when I tried to get across to the far side from that big rock. Thought I was going to drown.
BTW: Rebellion will be out this month.
LOL, That is awesome, you should slip that story in once or twice a series, a signature moment..
Looking forward to rebellion.
Thank you Ryk! Looking forward to it! Any hints as to what we can expect? Can you at least confirm Explosions and Jump Flashes?
@gbone We will cross that river when we come to it.
That's great news Ryk! Thanks for your tireless efforts to keep us entertained. Given how soon this one is coming out, does that mean your plans and attempts to speed up production and build a buffer have proved fruitful?
Here's hoping! Better start reading faster (only after setting foot on Haven on my re-read!)
Just finished Resurrection. Wow. This style of switching between several active threads kept me on the very edge and my heart pounding. What a great series. Ryk, you've become a MASTER story teller. I, too, am rereading. But starting at #10.
With TV mostly an empty wasteland, I am truly thankful for such a great writer.
The Expanse, Dark Matter, Star trek Discovery, Game of Thrones, Westworld, Stranger Things, Suits, All those Marvel shows & DC shows.
Being able to pause rewind and record tv. On demand tv. Netflix. Streaming/Downloading entire boxsets.
It is a good time to be alive my friend!
(In saying that this last week has been fairly dry... I should go outside more)
Some of those ARE good. Some not so much. Some have come and gone. TV needs GOOD SciFi. Battlestar Galactica (Second rendition) good. SciFi channel was supposed to deliver this and failed. Now it's just another rerun channel.
The best TV scripts come from great books. The ability to create epic SciFi (latest Star Trek movies) is now very possible. (So, Ryk, when you're tired of writing books, get with Steven Spielberg, he's not that far from you, and dream up a version of FS for TV)
I have perhaps 200 channels of which 95% are just trash. I record what ever good shows there are (too few), go through them and then go back to my Kindle. So I'm really thankful for hard working writers like Ryk.
Part of my problem is I'm retired from a 70 hour a week consulting job. Too much energy even at 69.
And Four Islands - thanks for chiming in.
Hot Damn!!
I clicked "publish" on Rebellion this afternoon. Should go on sale sometime tonight or early tomorrow.
Enjoy!
Awesome 🙂 Looking for it on Amazon but not there yet. Looking on smile.amazon.com technically. Perfect timing as I am heading off on vacation Saturday.
Quick question Ryk - Have you ever considered going to Comic Con in San Diego or NYC? I know it's a zoo but I'd go if I had a chance to listen to you give a talk and perhaps meet you!!
Took a hell of a lot of time to find it, but here it is: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06X6K37Q6/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1487412205&sr=1-6&keywords=rebellion&refinements=p_n_feature_browse-bin%3A618073011
I couldn't find it by frontier saga, ryk brown, his author page, etc... I had to search rebellion and then drill down through the categories to find it.
