Just remember the ones from the PC and maybe some other colonies don't have the immunity to the plague like the terrains.
There is already some proof that the Jung are different from the Terrans, in that General Bacca is described that he went through genetic engineering to have longer legs and that he could "look Eli in the eye", showing the Jung have an advanced medical technology. I'm thinking that the Jung are not as tall as Terrans due to something in the Jung physiology. With 1000 years and no contact the Humans of the Jung empire, the PC and Earth have already been on a divergent path physically with their genetics. It may be something Mr. Brown is setting up to possibly bring in a new virulent version of the bio-digital plague in the next series, or possible problems with birth defects with people inter-marrying from different regions (i.e. PC, Jung, Earth, Tanna and other core and fringe worlds) or any of a host of other problems Mr. Brown may have in his writers imagination. Something to think about... 🙂
Here is something else to chew over. When the Jung left earth defeated there should be some left over tech around. Shuttles, fighters, bases, weapons, computers etc... Not to mention what salvage they can get from the battles. Enough so the scientific and the engineers can start to take the stuff apart and learn and reverse engineer it.
Something else that has bothered me some.... If the Earth was spacefaring before the bio digital plague... Why are there no physical signs of this on say the moon or mars? Why no abandoned bases minor research outposts on Titan or someplace like that? Those bases don't have to hold the winning secrets to the war with the Jung, but could give say a new emitter type or plasma weapon that was under research when it all went to crap 1000 years ago.
Was it the earth's moon that had a secret massive gun? If so was that from the data ark as well?
cant remember...
As for other facilities around the solar system from pre-plague times, I'm thinking that there have been attempts to try and find them but the Jung threat took front seat on the importance level. There may be a story arc to come in the next books to maybe tell about possibly find some pre-plague outpost with info on others that may be out there.
@nuclearman I meant to go with Abby's technical name for it. Hyperluminal transition system. And so the kkv version would be ZPE2HTSK2P for zero point energy enabled hyperluminal transition kinetic kill projectile. 🙂
here comes more!!..
ZHD - zero-point hyperluminal drone
ZHT - zero-point hyperluminal torpedo
ZHS - zero-point hyperluminal shuttle
ZHF - zero-point hyperluminal fighter
Is it possible to go hyperluminal while going superluminal?
Super = greater than
Hyper = many times greater than
Even if there were left over bases from pre-plague era. But remember without human actions things fall apart. Unlike the base frozen in ice. Other bases would have either corroded due to toxic atmosphere of Jupiter's moons, damaged by meteor strikes on the moon. It might be more cost effective to start from scratch than trying to repair 1000 year old tech.
Another problem with a pre-plague base somewhere in the solar system is the possibility the the computer systems may still be infected so a quarantine of systems would be the word of the day if any are found. As for corroded of eroded bases on moons, chances are that they will be underground installations carved from rock or in natural caverns. So, a little clean up and a little rebuilding of any support structure and you could theoretically re-occupy a pre-plague base. Just 2 cents to through out there... 😉
I was just wondering if it's possible to "jump" while already in FTL. Which I think it is. If so, then theoretically, it's possible for a KKV in FTL to "jump" to within, say, .25 light second of its target. Leaving no time for the target to react. BOOM! 🙂
Regarding missing moon/martian bases... They were all systematically destroyed as a last ditch effort to make sure the plague doesn't spread. I believe you refer to this as 'scorched earth' 🙂
@lecter if something is in FTL traveling at you, you wouldn't see it coming because it is moving fast than the image reflected by light. So it's impossible to react to a KKV. As far as jumping during FTL would be risky because once you exit the jump your still going that same speed.
@Lecter:
I'm fairly sure it's already been established that Abby’s technical name failed with the general public, thus ZJD,ZJT,ZJS and ZJF would be appropriate, :-). Although, Scott's Dad might still enforce the previous name.
@Kelly:
You are probably right that after 1000 years any research faculties there weren't built to last probably haven't held up well.
@Lecter:
Another issue with Jumping during FTL is that the energy from the FTL drive might supercharge the jump drive causing it to travel a very long distance. Similar to the supercharge that happened from the explosion in Episode 1k, except probably more so.
What about a transporter? Too trekkie? Maybe there's a design for one in the Data Ark. Somewhere around book 13? Then Jessica wont need to keep doing HALOs from orbit. Or better use would be. Jump in, transport ghatazaks, jump out, jump back in 1 hour later and the battle platform is ours!
subspace coms! That'll be faster than even a jump com drone. But again, maybe too star trek like.
Comm Drones with jump drives could deliver near instant communications in a solar system. As for "subspace comms", yeah that's a little too trekkie along with transporters... The only reason the transporter existed in Star Trek is that it cost too much in special effects cost to film a landing shuttle craft or a landing starship. The special effect of the transporter was WAY cheaper for Roddenbery and crew.... And yes I know... My inner sci-fi nerd is showing.... 🙂
