I thought the Jung didn't have shields on their ships. They didn't have them when the defender class ships took them on and they haven't had them before when the aurora took them on.
I find this frustrating. They suddenly have shields out of no where?
I didn't noticed that when I read it. I figured all ships had shields. The aroura was going to get shields but the emitters were used for the jump drive. Also I thought the EDF Defender class ships would have them too can't remember if they did.
It wouldn't be unreasonable for the first wave or so to be cheaper, unshielded Jung ships. However, if that was the case, then someone on the Aurora should have pointed it out unless they never fought unshielded Jung ships.
Here is some information for ya.
Ep1 Location 1650 - The first Jung ship Aurora encounters has shields.
Ep 7 page 406 - Verified that the Jung ships had shields in combat with the Aurora when they evaded the trap.
Ep 8 makes no mention of shields for the ships when fighting the Defender class ships.
I think Ep 10 threw us for a loop because of Ep 8's lack of mention of shields, but shields were re-introduced in Ep 10. Could be that the Defenders packed such a punch, that shields didn't last long enough to mention (no battleship to contend with).
Thank you Apoc. (Ps every time I see your name I think of the matrix.)
Very useful to have that kind of data, Apoc. Thanks!
Still seems possible that the ones in 8 didn't have shields. While it might have been better to send those with shields, the Jung may have decided better to throw a wave unshielded ships that could be destroyed vs sending a wave of shielded shields that might get destroyed anyway. It's also possible that the shields weren't effective enough to make any difference.
I would imagine the ships in ep 1 may have been Jung Elites or at least above average. The reason being that the Jung really would have wanted to capture the Aurora, but likely underestimated her. From then on any expected encounters will the Aurora would have used above average ships. Since the attack on earth began shortly after the attack on the Aurora, it may have been the case that it was expected that the attack would succeed and only the ships sent to attack her were shielded, or perhaps the Jung had their shielded ships on standby nearby waiting to ambush the Aurora if she dropped in during the battle for Earth.
Although, it does seem more likely that the shields were just neglected or ineffective.
I would have to agree with Nuclearman. The mention of shields could also of not been made. Most of the combat sequences for the Defenders in Ep 8 were just before the fighting started or in the middle of fighting (after shields would of failed). So it could of just been that shields were not mentioned because they were already down during the combat sequences.
I think it feels like an oversight by Mr Brown to me.
Ep 7, location 5959 (first battle with the Jung at Earth): the plasma cannon can fire rapidly, and when it fires "a dozen" balls of energy fly towards the target. I took it ok when restrictions were placed on the plasma cannon in the later books, but this would be one of those little things that I think Ryk should go back and update for later readers that jump in. Maybe hire an editor to go completely through the series, looking for these artifacts. They are small, but they pull some readers out of the story (like me).
The shields discussion earlier may be one of these also.
Or we can just wait until Hollywood changes everything... 😉
Nothing is ever an accident, or an oversight. Why are surrounded, all of us, by mysteries, many of which are hiding in plain sight.
I will say no more.
oh man, the Man has slapped me down! Whoo-hoo, let the rampant speculation begin! 🙂
So, Jessica was on board during the previous, 12-shot testing. Her Psi powers supercharged the cannons to fire both faster and in increased quantity?
Mr. Randeen was incompetent, and hit the "Slow fire" button?
A cloaked Romulan Warbird was sitting directly behind the Aurora, and when she fired they fired also (11 times) to make up the difference?
Seriously, I have no idea what the point is here. Now I have to re-read #7-10 again... 😉
If I recall there was some back and forth about removing a missile battery so they mounted it externally to test only. It explains why it was so easy to move it over to the other ship. I think Aurora only has torpedoes which do not fire as rapidly.
I thought they... ok. So they were using the turret, not the plasma torpedoes, against those two cruisers in Ep.7? And the turret is lots more powerful than the plasma torpedoes? Build another one ASAP, then, dammit!
