HBO along with the same people who do game of thrones and BSG would make it a good show just hope that they don't ruin all of ryk Brown's hard work
I would love to see this as a Tv show. I agree that is needs very careful handling so as not to ruin it for all of us. Why not go to SYFY channel? They might do a good job.
I agree do not let them hack your books up. I think it would totally ruin your great work if someone did a hack job.
just be sure to keep as much creative control as you can.
But Wait Does it have to be Live series could shop it as an anime to cut cost problem is to convince people it's geared towards 18 and up audiences and not some little kids cartoon, more like the Spawn Series.
Valid point Omoro.
A good Anime production would be a option as well. 🙂
Appleseed/ExMachina Level of Production quality, just in form of Series.
If you all are stressed out about Hollywood (rightfully), why an American Studio in the first place?
Take a British one, or have a chat with the Producers of Star-Gate (Double Secret Productions). They had quite a run, pushing out several seasons, without getting cut off.
Regarding getting some one "Attached" to the series. Some one like Wil Wheaton, who already played in a long running SCI-FY series, would be a good catch from my point of view.
Ignore TV. Make a deal with Netflix or some service like that. They are more likely to stay true to the book rather than stamp their massive ego on it.
Finances. It is all about finances. I think Netflix would be an excellent choice, but to make a deal there you have to have an established production house. House of Cards came from the guys who made movies like '21' and include a known star (Kevin Spacey). Netflix would not strike a deal with a new talent, so you are left with the existing system. You might take it to TV, cable, movies, overseas, or a newer distribution system like Hulu/Prime/Netflix, but the gatekeepers are the same old production houses that everything else goes through. Hollywood, baby.
The production houses are (generally) tied to a studio, so that the studio gets first look at anything the production house is putting together. Sony/WB/Paramount/Universal/Fox/Disney control something like 90% of what gets made and seen. There are always others coming or going, and other movies get made, but the audiences are trivially small compared to the output of the big six.
Note also that these guys have multiple divisions and relationships. Dreamworks has gone through phases of merging and un-merging with Paramount over the years. Notice Marvel, though - they had a distribution deal with various of the majors, then Disney snapped them up. You still have to go through the system.
Bottom line is that Ryk needs to have the proper things setup - agent, lawyer, etc... and be incredibly lucky. If Transformers 23 is being made, chances are that studio won't want to make a 'smart' space opera.
Well that's a cynical look at studios today granted i agree with some of what's been said. Ultimately you also have to look at who is doing the writing, because realistically some changes needs to be made to translate a book in to a movie or series. In regards to transformers i liked the movie yes its not considered smart Sci Fi but most summer blockbuster movies are not intellectually stimulating they are just good wholesome popcorn fun movies anyone else who goes in expecting anything else really shouldn't. I think this series has the legs to inspire a new generation of Sci Fi fans in the same vein as Mr Roddenberry.
I love the idea, until I think of the way Hollywood will tweak it. I agree with Mr. Nay in that it will get tweaked into an unrecognizable monstrosity. No matter how it starts out, it will devolve into a high school-ish idea of personal relationships and social commentary. This is what killed Battlestar Galactica. Not to mention all the Star Trek series.
Whatever you do, keep executive producer rights and story and artistic control.
To be honest, as much as I love the idea of the Saga becoming a series, I don't think I would do it UNLESS I had complete control over the entire project. Hollywood has an amazing number of games that go on, all of which have nothing to do with the story or the quality of work. It's all about making money.
My dream would be to someday hire the right people and produce it myself, offering it as a subscription or pay-per-episode streaming series. With the way technology is going, within a decade, with a little funding, it isn't as far fetched an idea as one might think.
However, if someone like Netflix wants to produce it but leave my complete creative control, that would work. But there is no way I will ever risk letting someone screw it up just to get it made. In the long run, that wouldn't be worth it to me, no matter how much they paid.
@Ryk I too wouldn't have it any other way I'm hoping you and this series would be right up there with Roddenberry and others
So here's a plan. Write a one-off novel (not in this universe). Sell that. Don't worry about the control, just sell it to someone who can get it made. Then you are an "established" talent. Then you might gain the leverage to maintain control over a project like this.
One, maybe two successful sales will show you are a "player". So noodle other ideas, maybe spit them out before diving back into the saga part 2.
My $0.02...
Hey while we are talking about tv series has anyone thought about turning it into a video game like mass effect trilogy ? With a tie in TV series or something like that and can't wait for ep 12 or 13 with one ever it is
the way the saga is catching on keeping creative control will be easy enough. the contract will simply have to state and Ryk has final creative sayso on finished product ie Frank Herbert with the Dune movie. yes with todays cgi Dune would have been a super hit instead of just a cult classic. Unless an A-lister is on board loving the project as is with no alterations, anime would be the best route. Find a super actor who wants to put his legacy into a new project and it could be blockbuster movie. why not just send a sample to John Carpenter and let his Avatar cgi guys go to work on a test.
The Dune movie was way too short for a book that size. Modern CGI would not have saved it
