So I'm not sure if many of you know about Space Engineers, but they just announced that they now have placed Jump Drives into the game. It sounds so much like the books and is pretty neat! You have a "blind" jump (where you just jump in a direction, kinda like an escape jump) and then you have a GPS guided jump. Check it out!

Interesting, but seems like a Transition Drive (from Evan Currie's Odyssey One series) would be more interesting, especially in first person with Oculus Rift or something similar.

Though I don't think that sounds much like how it works in the series. Still a jump drive would be nice.

I haven't picked up Space Engineers yet, and it'll probably be a while before I do so. The reason being that the description of the game from the site is literally:

http://www.spaceengineersgame.com/about.html
Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction and maintenance of space works. Players build space ships and space stations of various sizes and utilization (civil and military), pilot ships and perform asteroid mining.

I like the idea, but not a fan of sandboxes. I like the idea of building space ships and space stations, but I'd like for there to be a purpose behind it to give it more meaning. On the military side, there are plenty of possible scenarios from sci-fi, but the most appropriate seems like, "Our people are new to space (and/or are a peaceful species), but we're being invaded so we need you (the player) to design new ships to defeat them as our current ships/defenses aren't good enough". I'd be surprised if this scenario doesn't get used at some point via the mod tools if nothing else.

Overall, I think Space Engineers is probably more accurately a playable technology demonstrator (hence it being a sandbox) then much of an actual game. I look forward to playing actual games that use the technology.
