I just heard Jerry Pournell discuss that the SFWA have changed their rules to allow self-published authors to join.

This is one of the few times where I am actually trying to disturb Ryk - Hey Ryk, what are your thoughts? Would you join the guild?

Seems like a small community, probably expanding fast with self-published authors such as yourself. It might be cool to come in to represent yourself and the "new wave".

Just a thought.

While I applaud their decision to welcome self-published authors, I have no interest in joining the SFWA, as they have nothing to offer me. I don't even consider myself a writer. I'm a creator of stories. Writing them down for others to read is simply a method of sharing them with others, and receiving compensation.

It was never about being a writer.

Ok, I respect your opinion. If it were me, I'd join just so I could have a drink with Larry Niven and those older legends of the biz. 🙂

From my chair, you're similar to those other writers, in that I have read not just one of your books, but multiples. The guys who I read one book of, don't interest me much. The authors where I read 3, 4, or more books, whether they are one long story or separate stories, those are the ones I remember with fondness. Were you to stop publishing today, I would still remember you with fondness for taking me on a journey.

But of course I respect you for whatever choices you make. I hope it remains fulfilling, now that you have been at it for several years full time.
