Most military organizations like the Alliance have a dress code and we know that the Alliance is using surplus EDF uniforms because they're the ones most readily available on Earth where its based, but part of a normal military dress code restrictions on the length male service members can have their hair. Does the Alliance have a regulation along those lines? And if it does, does that mean Josh had to get a haircut?

I only see long hair as a problem for those few people who operate in an environment where wearing a helmet isn't optional...

But, Josh is a pilot and that does require wearing a helmet every time he climbs in the cockpit of the Super Falcon.

A thought did occur to me, though. Do the thousand or so technicians, controllers, scientists, and engineers on Karuzara have a unique shoulder patch like the crews of the Aurora and Celestia?

Yip sarcasm isn't so easily read it seams. Josh used his hair to clean vomit from the inside of his helmut, with the knowledge that he can do that if he needs to; I do not see him cutting it anytime soon. I do imagine that he keeps it short enough to not go in his eyes / ties it back or something.

I imagine they ware a patch with a Big Rock smashing a Jung PB. or a Rock Jumping.

Even our various military branches today have more relaxed dress and appearance codes and regulations. Special forces, in particular, ignore outdated dress codes; they must often be ready on short notice to infiltrate a radically different culture where their own speech patterns, mannerisms, and especially their appereance (long hair, beards, etc.) will give them away to an enemy and put the mission at risk. Also, the Alliance struggles constantly on one level or another to create both civilian and military cohesion and productivity as they develop into an effective fighting force homogenizing a half-dozen allies with sometimes vastly different cultures, languages, military protocols and practices. Things like how (or if) one salutes or wears one's hair become less relevant than forming a clear chain of command and following orders in battle
