We know from the Netcasts and the descriptions of the pre-Plague Core in the main series so far that both cybernetic implants and nanites were widespread before the Bio-Digital Plague. But, how widespread was the use of genetic engineering? Was the science even used by humans before the Plague?

Considering the fact that we are starting to dabble with it now, I'd guess yes.
