I wonder if there could be an "off-topic" forum. It could have rants, raves, and could also be the "graveyard" of other forum's off topic or annoying posts. For instance, someone raving that you can't go faster than light because... I suppose those would go under the topic "Ye kinna change the laws of physics" 🙂
Like the "Inertial Dampeners" discussion on the other board?
I liked a discussion I heard in one of the Trek documentaries, talking about what a miraculous invention Transporters were. They allowed the plot to move at high speed, and to bypass all that boring "shuttle" nonsense. As a Literary trick they were a FANTASTIC invention.
Yes, exactly. The few authors I have met don't care much for critics, but all have had great relationship with their editors.
Since this is the off topic topic (for now) 🙂
I also remember a story (don't know if it was true) that Melville's original draft of Moby Dick had everyone die at the end. When the editor finished it, he asked how Ishmael managed to tell the story.
BTW, my brother had an album (!) of an interview with Roddenberry. The transporters were "invented" because they couldn't afford the special effects of launching & landing.
Another aside, Star Trek wasn't a high budget affair, unlike Mission:Impossible done in the same Desilu studios. In fact, if you watch the first season of MI (Good morning, Mr. Briggs) you will see Sulu, a number of extras, the corridor of the Enterprise with a different paint job, and a lot of the same sound effects.
The original ST shuttle Galileo used to be sitting around in a storage lot in Carson, CA in the 1980s. My dad rented a box in the same lot, and I drove in and saw it. It was sitting out in the elements, rotting away. The roof had tilted in (it was just plywood, after all). I remember thinking that I should do something with that knowledge, but then it disappeared. Nostalgia hits when something is no longer around, I guess.
I wonder what it would go for today. 🙂
I think the shuttle could fetch a fair price, although without functioning impulse engines the shipping might kill the deal.
I wish I could remember names, but I recall when Star Trek: The Next Generation was going to come out, the lady considered the 'main fan' thought it was important to note that there was now a bathroom on the bridge of the new Enterprise. However, I don't recall that it was ever seen.
On the other hand, Babylon 5 had a scene in a multi-species men's room. I think that's where Cdr. Sinclair finds out that he was not among the first 130+ persons nominated to be in charge of the station.
Bjo Trimble. Yep, she was a hardcore fan, back in the days when it was possible for her to get an invite to the set during filming. Can you imagine that today?
Yes, it was Bjo Trimble. Thanks!
